Tessier in Cheverny: when family passion reshapes a winemaking trajectory
Domaine Tessier embodies the often discreet history of small Loire producers who find their uniqueness by staying true to a certain idea of artisanal work. Located in Cheverny, this family property experienced a decisive turning point a few years ago when the next generation took over. This handover was not a simple transmission: it was the opportunity to reinvent a viticultural project without denying its heritage.
For decades, the estate operated within a traditional framework, producing its wines in relative discretion. Then, the takeover by the children marked a gradual but noticeable shift. This new team brought with them a more assertive vision, a desire to communicate differently and to give the estate its own personality.
Tessier practices viticulture that prioritizes ecological balance. Soil work is conducted with care, seeking to maintain natural biodiversity without resorting to superfluous chemical inputs. This approach is reflected in harvest preparation: grapes are carefully selected, sometimes in several passes, to ensure optimal maturity and impeccable health.
Winemaking follows a philosophy of measured non-intervention. Vinifications respect the characteristics specific to each grape variety and vintage, without seeking to impose an arbitrary style. Aging varies according to the wines: some will stay in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness, others in oak barrels to gain structure and complexity. Racking and transfers are conducted regularly to gradually refine the organoleptic profile.
The estate's portfolio reflects this diversity of approaches. Tessier produces white Cheverny based on Sauvignon and Chardonnay, offering mineral freshness characteristic of the terroir. The reds traditionally combine Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Côt, delivering wines with fine tannins and delicate aromas. Without neglecting the rosés, whose deceptive simplicity hides beautiful craftsmanship. Each cuvée is part of an approach of sincerity: showing what the Cheverny terroir can offer rather than transforming it.
This trajectory, modest in appearance, illustrates how much a generational takeover can revitalize a viticultural project without distorting its essence. At Tessier, the transmission was accompanied by a welcome identity affirmation.
